A Wardrobe that transitions through a woman’s life
Attention LA Moms: there’s a new Fashion line that will make you plan your day around your outfit. We discovered Los Angeles-based SHIARJO recently and spent time looking through every item of the new collection, Chapter 1.
What we found were uniquely feminine pieces with an architectural feel to them. SHIARJO has honed in on the art of using fabrics as a building materials, capable of creating both hard and soft looks for multi-generational women. Mommy in Los Angeles® had a conversation with the brand’s founder and creative director, Shirin AK who attributes inspiration for SHIARJO from the natural beauty of women.
“I created SHIARJO to move between the conventional boundaries of age and lifestyle because I find that to be a truer reflection of how our customer lives her life,” says Shirin. “Whether it be a woman pursuing her professional career or a woman juggling the day-to-day of being a mother, we create clothes for the woman who wants her wardrobe to transition through life with her.”
Mommy In Los Angeles: Your brand description states “SHIARJO combines the structure and space of architectural design with the responsiveness and fluidity of natural form.” In order to achieve this, can you give us an idea of the the types of materials you use?
Shirin AK: I use a lot of lines, twists and crisp details in my pieces. Some of the details may be small, but they’re evident enough to make each piece special. I draw a ton of inspiration from architecture.
Many people don’t know this, but I originally went to school to become an architect. I was always fascinated by the structure of things and how the came together. While I never ended up pursuing that career path, the things I learned have stayed with me even as I transitioned to becoming a fashion designer.
When it comes to designing, my main focus is always ensuring a comfortable but flattering fit. While some pieces may accentuate the neckline, others may focus more on elongating the legs, and so on. There’s a science behind creating shapes that inspire women to feel confident but still maintain a balance between function and fashion.
There’s a science behind creating shapes that inspire women to feel confident but still maintain a balance between function and fashion. We’re always honing in on that.
Mommy In Los Angeles: When did you realize Fashion was your passion?
Shirin AK: I remember when I was little, my mother used to come up with small “DIY” fashion projects for us to do together during the summer. She used to help me cut up my old jeans and customize them with trims. We even used to make dresses for my Barbies using cotton balls! When I was 7, I used a sewing machine for the first time with the help of my grandmother’s best friend (who was an amazing designer) and made a cute, red floral skirt for myself. The process of imagining something and them bringing it to life has always been so exciting to me. And doing that with fashion has been a part of my for as long as I can remember.
