BEST OF L.A.’S FAVORITE “RUSH-HOUR” PASTRY

The original “rush-hour” treat and the most famous grab-and-go breakfast on the planet is having a renaissance, and Union Station is taking guests into the center of the movement with a one-day edible exploration of L.A.’s favorite pastry.

The first-ever DTLA Donut Festival will be held on Saturday, June 16, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Union Station South Patio.

The momentously mouthwatering event will showcase the donut in all its many guises: plain, glazed and filled; traditional; and new wave along with “donut-adjacent” treats including churros, apple fritters and (of course) donut holes.

Guests will have an opportunity to stroll through the The Whole Donut Marketplace, a baker’s dozen of donut vendors from L.A.’s old-school cult favorites to trendy “fashion-forward” pastry including:

  • Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts, genius new-style donuts from actor Danny Trejo.
  • Primo’s Donuts, a classic Westside L.A. donut destination since 1956.
  • DK’s Donuts, home of the double-decker #O-NUT featured on Food Network.
  • Glazed Donut Bar, made-to-order, custom-glazed donuts with choose-your-own glazes, toppings and drizzles.
  • Fat Uncle Farms, created by organic almond farmer and local-wheat pioneer from Lompoc making donuts with his locally grown and milled-heirloom Sonora wheat.

A “live fry” donut station will make hot donuts to order, and a “pimp your donut” experience will allow visitors to customize their donuts at a “flavor bar” of various fillings and toppings.

The DTLA Donut Festival will also feature third-wave coffee vendors for dunking as well as donut-compatible offerings including wood-fired pizza and craft beer to round out the edible offerings.

Chef demos throughout the day will teach visitors how to make their own photo-ready donuts, and hands-on coffee workshops from the Institute of Domestic Technology will offer a dive deep into the technical how-to of the perfect cup.

In the spirit of fostering positive relations between the LAPD and the DTLA community, Donut Festival goers and the city’s uniformed officers will be invited to drop in for Coffee with a Cop, a community-outreach initiative launched in 2011 to bring together officers and the citizens they serve every day.
